The women’s distance medley relay team met the provisional national qualifying mark, with a time of 12:48.25 at the University of Oklahoma in Norman in a meet hosted by Oklahoma Christian University on Feb. 5. It was the season’s third indoor track meet.  Jordan Unruh, nursing senior, Anjaih Clemons, business administration senior, Taylor Kinnamon, business administration junior, and Amy Pierson, nursing senior, ran the race just 55 seconds off of the auto national qualifying mark.

Chris Copeland, psychology senior, broke the school record by a second, and became an automatic national qualifier in the 800 meter. Darnell Pittman, business junior, received second in the 600 meter, which qualified him for nationals. Conner Drendel, elementary education senior, received third and Carrington Crum, elementary education junior fourth in the 1000 meter. Both qualified for nationals.

The weather last week has made it harder for the track team to practice, but the student athletes were still able to keep up their good work.

“Obviously it has not been the best weather for practicing this past week, but the students still performed well,” said Mike Kirkland, head women’s track coach.

One of the things Kirkland is looking for is consistency, and continuing to step forward, and so far he finds the results very positive.

“It really felt like we continued to make progress, for being on our third meet,” said Kirkland. “We had a fairly significant amount of personal bests, so for the third meet we are where we are supposed to be.”

“I think we ran really well,” said Unruh, “This is kind of new, I’ve never ran the 1200 before, so I was nervous. We worked really well as a team. We’ve ran different events together before, so we came together very well.”

In field event highlights Allyssa Zentner, athletic training sophomore, threw her personal best in shot put and received overall fifth place and a personal best in the 20# weight throw which Kirkland said was a big improvement. Mandy Bostwick, elementary education junior, as well threw a personal best in shot put, and received sixth place.

Jim Helmer, head cross country and men’s track coach, said that the team did well overall at the meet this past weekend.

“I think it was another good meet,” said Helmer. “We have a young team, and still some maturing to do, but it is still early in the season.”

The next meet will be at Pittsburg State University on Feb. 11.
