The Lady Builder softball team swept the Threshers of Bethel College Wednesday evening. The double header was won 10-2 and 8-7 in North Newton, Kan.

After a slow first inning, the Builders jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Allison Utz, freshman outfielder, scored Alex Ritzema, freshman infielder, and Allie Flinn, junior pitcher, on a double.

The fourth inning was when the real damage occurred for the Threshers. Remington Samuels, sophomore outfielder, batted in three on a bomb to deep left-center field. Samuels, Ritzema, Alejandra Palacious, senior outfielder, and Megan Walentynowicz, senior infielder, rounded out the scoring for the Builders with a run each. Bethel answered with one player crossing the plate to bring the score to 9-1.

The game was called short due to run rule in the fifth. Taylor Campuzano, freshman outfielder, was the last Builder to cross the plate in the first game. The Threshers batted in one more run to end the game 10-2.

Samuels scored the first run of the game in the first inning of a Palacious’ single. The second inning ended scoreless for either team.

The Threshers came out firing in the third scoring four runs on three hits. Samuels and Peyton Timmerman, freshman infielder, crossed plate for two runs on a Palacious’ double.

Roles were reversed in the fourth. Flinn, Campuzano, and Timmerman worked their way around the bases for three runs for Southwestern. Bethel added one run to take the game into the fifth inning down 5-6.

The fifth and seventh innings ended scoreless for both teams. Two runs were scored by each team in the sixth for a final score of 8-7, Southwestern. Samuels and Palacious crossed for the last two Builder runs of the day.

Palacious led the Southwestern offense with three hits and three RBIs. Walentynowicz followed just behind with two hits and two RBIs while Ritzema added two RBIs of her own.

The Builders return to action at home on Saturday afternoon to match up against the Warriors of Sterling College. Game time is set for 1 and 3 p.m.
