The football season is in full swing and they are looking to start the season off strong. New faces are scattered across the roster with transfers and new freshman coming in for the 2019 season. A lot of veterans have returned and want to improve on the 6-5 overall and 5-5 records in KCAC play from last season. The Builder football team are predicted to finish 6th this season in KCAC standings.

Head Coach Brad Griffin enters his 5th season at the helm for the football team, returning many starters on both sides of the ball. Assistant coaches, Jake Kapustka and Victor Redd, are entering their first season on the coaching staff.

“At the quarterback position we are very young and inexperienced,” said Brad Griffin, Head Football Coach, assessing that position.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Moundbuilders return nine starters from last season. Returning from last years’ squad is Keyshawn Wyatt, junior running back, and Jaquilis Coleman, junior running back.

“Things are going great we are learning a lot and I would say that we are going to have a great season if we stick together as a family,” said Dustin Rivera, junior offensive line. Rivera returns to the offensive line after All-American honors from the previous season.

The Builders return three All-Conference players. This includes Woody Banks, sophomore wide receiver, and Edrick Gonzales and Tanner Spencer, senior wide receivers.

“I know as a team our outlook on this season is to go win the conference and make a playoff run in the postseason. We felt like we let it slip through our fingers last year and we don’t want to have to feel that pain again,” said Spencer.

“On the defensive side of the ball we also return nine starters with significant roles on our defense,” said Griffin.

Out of the nine returning starters, there were three that are 2nd Team All-Conference. There is Courtney Cravin, junior defensive line, Grant Torgerson, junior linebacker, and Israel Harper, junior linebacker.

“I’m very excited about this years’ team. We finally have a heavy upperclassman roster and a close group,” said Torgerson.

Gio Allen, sophomore defensive back, and Travon Crockett, junior defensive back, are said to be in a very young secondary.

“We know who this season is dedicated too, our fallen brothers Jacobi and Shelvin, I feel like that is all the motivation that we need as a team because they wanted this more than anybody. I know we’ll make them proud,” said Harper.

The Builders open the 2019 season at home to defend against Midland University on Aug. 31st at 6 p.m. Be sure to come out and support strong start to their season.
