The Builder golf teams traveled to Victoria, Texas to open the 2015 Spring season at the Claude Jacobs Invitational on Feb. 15 and 16. The tournament was played at The Club at Colony Creek. The men’s team finished 13 out of 13 and the women’s team placed 14 out of 14.
“The weather was definitely a factor,” said Alyssa Richardson, professional communication senior.
Dealing with weather was an immense part of this tournament. On the first day, the golfers faced heat, wind, and rain. The second day was no better, Hannah Mason, biology senior, said, “Temperatures dropped about 30 degrees and started to rain after just nine holes. It’s difficult to swing a golf club when you can’t feel your hands.”
Although both teams placed last, they have a positive attitude as they move forward in their season.
Richardson said, “We didn’t get much preparation for this tournament but we are going to hit it hard in practice to prepare for our next tournament.”
As for the men’s team, Seth Bryan, business junior, said, “It’s a long season and we have to keep working on our game. We just need to get ready for conference in March.”
Mason led the Lady Builders as she shot the best round of the tournament with a 73 (+1) in the final round.
Bryan and Shane Gilbert, business administration major, were the leaders for the men’s team. Gilbert shot 229 with a 75 (+3) on the opening 18 holes. The second round he managed the card his lowest round at 74 (+2) and finished with an 80 (+8).
Bryan followed closely behind Gilbert. He shot a 230 with a 74 (+2) and 73 (+1) in Sunday’s rounds and an 83 (+11) in the final round.
