The Moundbuilder basketball team knocked off the Tabor College Blue Jays 76-71 in overtime Thursday.

Both teams came out strong as neither gained a lead by more than five points over the other throughout the entire first half. The Builders took a 31-26 lead late in the half, but Tabor would narrow the deficit to 34-32 as the teams headed into the locker rooms.

Both teams shot evenly as the Builders hit 43.3 percent of their shots in the first half, while the Jays shot 44.0 percent from the field.  Justin Diggles, senior guard, lead the Builders with 10 points in the first half.

Tabor built off of their momentum from the first half and took an early lead in the second, going up 39-38.  They didn’t stop there. The Jays led by as many as 10 points in the second half.

The Builders fought back and retook the lead 57-56 with a little over eight minutes remaining in regulation. After a back and forth battle, the Builders found themselves up 67-64 with 4.4 seconds remaining and the possession belonging to Tabor.  Cody Arnold, sophomore guard, took the inbounds pass and dribbled up the court just in time to hit a last-second three-point shot to send the game into overtime.

From there on out the Builders dominated, outscoring the Jays 9-4 in overtime to improve their record to 8-9 on the season and 4-3 in conference play.

The men’s next game is at 7 p.m. Jan. 14 at Bethany College.
